Health Information Management Leadership Center Launches

The CARE HIM Leadership Center prepares health information professionals to confidently lead change as hospitals migrate to an electronic practice environment

CHICAGO, October 13, 2003 – Care Communications Inc. (CARE), a leading Health Information Management (HIM) consulting company, today announced the new “CARE HIM Leadership Center.” The transformation to an Electronic Health Record (EHR) represents a significant paradigm shift for healthcare delivery and reporting, requiring leaders to exhibit extraordinary leadership skills to rapidly lead change within a challenging environment. The Leadership Center offers HIM professionals advanced personalized services to hone the leadership skills necessary to effectively manage the transformation to an electronic practice environment.

“Organizations are making the transition to EHR and e-HIM® major priorities today, and CARE has created a unique approach to leadership growth to prepare HIM professionals for this complex transition,” said Leslie Ann Fox, CEO and president of CARE. “Through the CARE HIM Leadership Center, individual HIM professionals and HIM department management teams have access to educational programs, individual coaching and consultation that will enhance their capacity to be strong leaders throughout the transition.”

Some of the industry events fueling the rapid adoption of the electronic health record include:

  • July 23, 2003; Rep. Nancy Johnson, chair of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee introduced the “National Healthcare Information Infrastructure and Interoperability Act of 2003”
  • July 31, 2003, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its report “Key Capabilities of an Electronic Health Record System,” identifying eight core functions that the EHR should be capable of performing to promote greater safety, quality and efficiency in healthcare delivery
  • August 6, 2003, Health Level Seven (HL7) published the EHR Functional Model and Standard as a Draft Standard for Trial Use (DSTU); the culmination of an intense effort to coalesce the model, functions and hierarchy and map them to the IOM’s Letter Report, “Key Capabilities of an Electronic Health Record System” released July 31st.

“HIM practitioners need to redefine their roles for the new electronic practice environment. Their roles will certainly be expanding, and the CARE HIM Leadership Center will help them use this time of redefinition to become more capable leaders,” added Fox. Leadership presence, personal responsibility, and a thoughtful approach to relationships under stress are essential for successfully redesigning the HIM work environment and transforming HIM to meet new demands for EHRs and related services just now coming into focus.” Click here for more information on the CARE HIM Leadership Center.
